![]() “Utterly gripping with richly drawn, hugely compelling characters, this is a first-class thriller with heart” (Lucy Foley, New York Times bestselling author) that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Known locally as the Dark Place, the dense forest is the writer’s favorite place for long walks and it’s on one such walk that she stumbles upon a mysterious note that simply reads, “DIG HERE.”Ĭould this be a clue towards what has happened to the missing young couple? And what exactly is buried in this haunted ground? One year later, a writer moves into a cottage on the edge of the woods that border the same estate. On a beautiful summer night in a charming English suburb, a young woman and her boyfriend disappear after partying at the massive country estate of a new college friend. ![]() ![]() From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Then She Was Gone comes “her best thriller yet” (Harlan Coben, New York Times bestselling author) about a young couple’s disappearance on a gorgeous summer night, and the mother who will never give up trying to find them. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Firstly, early Christian pacifists designated war as a cataclysmic phenomenon that constitutes the opposite of ‘peace’ and is knowable through science. This thesis documents these three processes of war’s construction as a governance problem. Using archival material, I show that war was constructed as a problem in three interlocking processes that rendered it undesirable but calculable and, therefore, ultimately governable. How problems of international politics are constructed matters because such processes determine what a problem is and how it has to be resolved. I argue that for policy to be oriented towards prevention, war needed to be constructed as a problem of international governance. This thesis grapples with how the notion of war as preventable became dominant in international discourse. War and conflict were seen as inevitable, justifiable and productive for centuries, yet today conflict prevention is a core item on the agendas of major international actors. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Num Pages: 112 pages, Full colour throughout. You’re supposed to feel sick to your stomach, and sick of everyone involved, and unsure of what to believe except that you still can’t look away. I’ve tried to imitate the breathless, gossipy voice of tabloids and viral threads (you know, the ones with flagrant disregard for truth). The story is all about our protagonists, Sal the Cacophony (get the title pun now?), who is awaiting her execution. My best description of this fascinating book is that it’s a cross between a western, Kill Bill, and a quest fantasy. Happily, this time I stuck to the book like glue on more glue. However, I have wanted to give Sykes another shot since my first attempt, and his new series provided the perfect opportunity. Although his first books were funny, I found them a little shallow and quickly lost the interest to continue. I enjoy his Twitter persona, but I had some difficulty getting into his first series, Bring Down Heaven, as it read too much like a transplanted Dungeons & Dragons campaign. He is a major personality online and can often be found by his hilarious tweets and loud voice about the genre. ![]() If you follow any fantasy authors on Twitter, you are probably at least aware of Sykes. Seven Blades in Black is the first novel in a new series by Sam Sykes. My title is a pretty clever pun, but you won’t get it unless you read this book – which you should. ![]() ![]() The story is set up with 3 confusing layers, the actual narrative of these “writers” being locked in a theater and self sabotaging everything every chance they get, a shitty poem about each unlikeable character, and some inane short story that really has no point other than to be shocking. Unless you’re brand of horror is gross out horror than I guess this could work for you, but to me it was just a pointless excuse to be over the top disgusting for no reason. It is not anything that I enjoy, there is no horror here. Haunted has been suggested to me so many times and was on so many horror lists I finally said ok why not? I should not have done that. I read Fight Club and thought it was ok but overall it was just too long and too pretentious. ![]() ![]() I’ve never really been a fan of Palahniuk’s books or his writing. ![]() ![]() ![]() He argues for an end to our outmoded industrial educational system and proposes a highly personalized, organic approach that draws on today's unprecedented technological and professional resources to engage all students, develop their love of learning, and enable them to face the real challenges of the twenty-first century.
